WHAT IS THE OLDEST CITY IN THE UNITED STATES??
Do you know the name of the oldest city in the United States? If you do not know, it is St. Augustine!! This city has been on our list for awhile, and we were so excited to be able to stop on our road trip from Greensboro, NC, to Delray Beach, FL. We decided to try to limit our trip to about two hours so we could get to our final destination at a decent time, and we managed to get a lot done in two hours!
St. Augustine was founded in 1565 by a Spanish conquistador, named Pedro Menendez de Aviles.
Our first stop of our quick visit was to check out Castillo de San Marcos, which is a National Monument. Castillo de San Marco is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States.
Unfortunately, we were not able to go inside due to Covid closures, but we were able to walk around the grounds and then take a virtual tour from home. After the virtual tour, we were able to complete the Junior Ranger booklet and will mail them in to receive the girls’ Junior Ranger pins.
Next, we took a walk down through St. George Street. It is a tiny street that is only open to foot-traffic. The street is lined with shops, restaurants and bars. The girls had such a fun time walking and checking out their surroundings. We saw pirates and even a lady with a parrot on her shoulder!
We stopped in a restaurant, St. Augustine Seafood Company, to order lunch and then found a picnic table out back to sit in the shade while we ate our first meal not in a home setting since March!
After lunch, we wandered along St. George St. some more and then ended the visit with our favorite – ICE CREAM! Kilwin’s is our must stop ice cream place anywhere we go so we were definitely excited to find it in St. Augustine. Travel tip: Pick the St. Augustine Mud (chocolate chips and caramel)!
