THANKSGIVING IN SWITZERLAND??
Does Switzerland celebrate Thanksgiving? No, they do not. But, there are many people throughout Switzerland who do take part in the celebrations.
Basel is very well-known for having a great quality of life as well as a high expat population. About one third of the city’s population is made up of expats so there is definitely a need for Thanksgiving by some of the population. Most of the major grocery stores sell turkeys – for a high price that is. Turkey dinners are definitely not a household favorite like it is in the US so they do come at a premium.
I bet you may be thinking… Oh no, will you be doing anything for Thanksgiving? Well, we are actually starting the process of moving from our temporary home to our new rental home. The moving truck comes on Thanksgiving day, and we are very excited to get situated. So, no, we will not be doing anything for Thanksgiving on the actual day this year but we will definitely be making our favorites on another day once we are situated.
Thanksgiving will be celebrated differently for everyone this year. Some people are able to be together as a family and some are not due to distance and Corona. It has been an interesting year for sure, and I think there is still a lot for everyone to be thankful for.
We are thankful for this amazing opportunity. We are living in a different country, and we are able to experience so much beauty and history. We are also very thankful for a family who supports us. It is not easy when a part of your family moves far away, but everyone has been so proud of us, as well as happy for us. We are thankful for the extra family time that Corona has given us. The four of us have all been together since March (with the exception of our California and cross-country experience), which is definitely not the norm. Gregg normally travels a lot and with business travel at a standstill, we have taken advantage of that time together.
Even though this year is different (for everyone) and we are not celebrating at a large table filled with family members, we will make sure to reflect on everything we are thankful for. We will also FaceTime our family and friends. And we will be sure to watch the football games! How are you celebrating this year?
Thank you so much for wandering along with us! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
