ONE NIGHT IN STUTTGART WITH KIDS

One of our favorite things about living in Switzerland are the two-week breaks throughout the school year. These four breaks makes the year fly by, and the kids really enjoy the extra free time. Every fall, holiday season, winter & spring, we are able to travel, relax at home, send the kids to a school camp or do whatever we choose. During this spring break, our friends from the US visited for a week. Once their visit was over, I ventured for one night in Stuttgart with kids.

Stuttgart is the capital of the German state of Baden-Württemburg, which is located in southwestern Germany, and it is the 6th largest city in Germany. The Stadtbahn, which is a light-rail system, will get you from place to place with no trouble!

So, what is there to do in Stuttgart? Well, there is tons to do! We are going to tell you about four fun things to do while you’re in Stuttgart.

1. Visit the Mercedes-Benz Museum – Did you know that Stuttgart is home to both Porsche and Mercedes-Benz? And, they both have museums! Unfortunately, we did not have time to visit Porsche, but we were able to visit Mercedes-Benz. Admission was 10 Euros per adult and free for kids under 14. At the entrance to the museum, you are given an audio guide in the language of your choice. They have kid-sized audio guides as well so the girls were pleased. The museum sprawls on nine levels with over 1,500 exhibits! We spent about two hours exploring this amazing museum. There is even a kids’ area on the bottom floor along with a cafe and museum shop.

2. Shop along Königstrasse – Königstrasse is a pedestrian shopping street filled with restaurants, shops and places to relax! There is 1.2 kilometers of shops to explore, and we really enjoyed our time window shopping and people watching. If you’re a fan of TJMaxx in the US, make sure to check out TKMaxx in Stuttgart as it is the European counterpart.

3. Hang out in Schlossplatz – After shopping until you drop along Königstrasse, head right over to Schlossplatz to relax and enjoy the greenery. Schlossplatz, or Palace Square, is the largest square in the center of Stuttgart. It is also home to the Neues Schloss, or New Castle, which was built for Duke Carl Eugen von Wuerttemberg. Construction began in 1746, and Wuerttemberg hoped to make Stuttgart the second Versailles.

Once we were hungry for dinner, we headed to the left side of the square to enjoy dinner at Carls Brauhaus. This restaurant is kid-friendly and serves traditional German food. We sat outside, enjoyed the view of the square and I had a delicious German beer!

4. Enjoy the outdoors at Killesberg Hill Park – Killesberg Hill Park is the perfect place to visit on a nice day. There is plenty to do to keep both parents and kids occupied. Between the animals, playground, carousel and mini train, the kids will be busy for hours. Adults will really enjoy the beer gardens, delicious food options and the beautiful nature. The girls loved this park, and we could have stayed all day!
