ONE DAY IN THE BLACK FOREST ITINERARY

Have you ever heard of the Black Forest? Well, the Black Forest is where fairytales come to life! The Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales was originally published in 1812, and many of these tales are said to have been inspired by the beautiful Black Forest. Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Hansel & Gretal and Snow White are a few of the famous tales that are said to come from this special region. So, what is there to do in the Black Forest? Well, keep reading to see our one day in the Black Forest itinerary.

Stop #1: Black Forest Open Air Museum

We hopped in the car and headed north for the Black Forest Open Air Museum. The Vogtsbauernhof displays historic farmhouses from up to 600 years ago. These buildings have been moved from their original location to the museum for display, and they are very interesting to tour! The girls loved seeing how people from the Black Forest lived throughout time. There are also animals to see as well as a great playground. Since we had a packed day, we only stayed for about an hour and a half, but you could definitely stay all day if you have unlimited time.

Stop #2: World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock

Our second stop in the Black Forest was the world’s largest cuckoo clock. I absolutely love visiting anything that is the world’s largest so this was a must visit! This cuckoo clock was completed in 1994, and it earned the world’s largest title in 1997. It’s a quick stop, especially if you time it well to see it go off, which happens on the hour and half hour. Unfortunately, we missed this because we were in a rush, whoops!

Stop #3: Triberg Waterfall

The Triberg Waterfall is said to be the largest waterfall in Germany. This magical waterfall is located in Triberg, and it reaches 163 m. The paths to and from the waterfall areas can be steep, but they are very manageable! There is differing information on if it is actually Germany’s largest waterfall, but either way, it is a beautiful waterfall to visit! If you decide to visit the waterfall, make sure to bring cash since they do not take cards!

Stop #4: Eat Black Forest Cake in Triberg

Can you actually visit the Black Forest without having Black Forest cake? In my opinion, NOPE! We decided that it was a must while we were visiting, and it certainly was delicious! There are many cafes offering this famous cake, but we choose Cafe Adler. We enjoyed sitting at the nice terrace, and it was great spot to relax and eat a snack after a busy day.

Stop #5: Lake Titisee

Lake Titisee is a beautiful lake in the southern Black Forest. It was created by the last ice age, and it is 2 km long. The town of Titisee offers many restaurants, shops and views of the lake. We arrived in the afternoon on a Saturday in late May and there were loads of people. We enjoyed dinner at the Bergsee Restaurant on the covered terrace overlooking the lake. The girls absolutely loved playing along the shores of the lake while Yeti and I took in the atmosphere.
