FIVE REASONS WHY YOU MUST VISIT BELGIUM
Hey everyone! I hope you all have had a wonderful summer. Although I haven’t had the chance to write a blog post recently, worry not. It has been a busy summer of taking care of the children and, of course, traveling! At the beginning of August, the girls and I were lucky enough to hop on the train system and enjoy a four-night trip throughout Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany. Belgium blew us away and we fell in love with this gorgeous country. So, please keep reading below to see our five reasons why you must visit Belgium.
1. Fries
Are you a fan of fries? If you are, Belgium is definitely a must-visit for you! Belgian fries are absolutely incredible. They are said to be a little bit thicker and more crunchy than their fry neighbors to the south. The most traditional topping with Belgian fries is mayonnaise, and it is such a great combo! A word of advice though when you order these deliciously fried potatoes – make sure not to call them French Fries!
There is even a fry museum in Bruges, and we highly recommend visiting! The girls absolutely loved the Fruit Kabaret, and we all enjoyed learning about the history of fries! Admission costs 8 Euros per adult and 6 Euros per child. Don’t forget to eat some of the delicious fries in the restaurant on the bottom floor before you leave!
2. Waffles
Did you know that there are two types of Belgian waffles? Crazy, right? There are Brussels waffles and Liege waffles, and they are both delicious! Brussels waffles, which are pictured below, are square-shaped and fluffy. We stopped at Waffle Factory for breakfast before sightseeing in Brussels, and it was the perfect way to start the day! The girls enjoyed their waffles with a Nutella topping. I ate my waffle with strawberries and drizzled milk chocolate!
Liege waffles have uneven edges, and they are crispier on the outside as well as thicker than Brussels waffles. Which kind of waffle would you rather try?
3. Chocolate
Belgium is not only known for fries and waffles, but it is also known for chocolate! Can one country have any more deliciousness? There are numerous chocolate shops to choose from while wandering around Brussels so the girls and I came up with our own chocolate food tour!
We started our tour by visiting the Choco-Story Museum and taking a chocolate workshop. The workshop cost 32 Euros per person, and we were able to create a ton of delicious chocolate concoctions. Believe it or not, we still have some treats leftover that we have been working our way through all of August.
We then headed to four different chocolate shops to taste a bit of chocolate at each! Mary Chocolatier, Neuhaus, Pierre Marcolini and Le Comptoir de Mathilde! Watch the video below to see which one was our favorite! Our DIY tour was a really fun way to explore the city of Brussels while also enjoying some incredible chocolate.
4. Fun Sights
Have you ever seen a statue of a boy peeing in a fountain? I am sure you have, but have you seen one in a foreign country? Well, Brussels has one called Mannequin Pis, and it is one of the fun sights you can see while visiting Belgium! This historic statue was designed in 1388, and it definitely brings a giggle out of many visitors!
5. Medieval Cities
Belgium is full of medieval cities, and they are truly beautiful and very interesting! We absolutely loved visiting Bruges and Ghent, and we were even able to see both in one day! It was amazing to look at all of the incredible architecture in these two cities. Make sure to check out our video about this wonderful day below!
Are you ready to hop on the plane and visit Belgium? It’s such a beautiful country, and we hope to explore it more in the future!
