WHAT IS THERE TO DO IN SOUTH JERSEY WITH KIDS?
After leaving Southeastern PA, we stopped in Greensboro for three amazing nights and then headed to the Jersey Shore. I have been going to the Jersey Shore every summer since I was ten, so I absolutely love enjoying one of my favorite places with the girls! We were lucky enough to spend 11 wonderful nights in Longport, NJ, this summer! So, what is there to do in South Jersey with kids? The options are endless! Below are five of our favorites!
1. Lucy the Elephant – If you have driven in Margate, Ventnor, or Longport, you have probably seen Lucy the Elephant. She is a historical landmark, and she is one of the girls’ favorites during every trip to the Jersey Shore. Lucy was built in 1882 out of tin and wood by James V. Lafferty. And, she is the world’s largest elephant. Throughout her time, Lucy has served as a restaurant, home, and tavern. To explore Lucy inside, it costs $8.50/adult and $4.00/child (and the view of the ocean is just gorgeous from the top).
2. Cape May, NJ – Cape May is America’s original seaside resort. Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to visit this trip, but it is definitely on our top to-do list! We all love to visit the Cape May Zoo, shop at Washington Street Mall, which is an outdoor walking mall, and enjoy the beautiful Victorian houses! If we have time, my husband loves to eat at the Lobster House!
3. Delicious FOOD! – The delicious food at the beach is endless! For breakfast, Junior’s Doughnuts in Margate is so yummy! If you’re in the mood for bagels, Junior’s also has bagels or Hot Bagels & Deli is really good! As far as subs, there are two delicious options in the area. Dino’s is my all-time favorite, and their tuna is insanely delicious! Seriously – I dream about their tuna subs! If you are closer to Ventnor, Sack-o-Subs is another great option! For dessert, make sure to go to Jagielky’s for some delicious candy and chocolate treats! Margate Dairy Bar or Two Cents Plain are our top picks for ice cream! If you’re looking for a kid-friendly restaurant recommendation, we love to take the kids to Ventura’s Greenhouse!
4. Ocean City, NJ – Mini golf, rides, ice cream, pizza, arcades, shopping, candy… It sounds like the perfect place to children, right? Well, the Ocean City boardwalk is an amazing spot to bring the kids! Parking can be difficult so you will either have to find a spot or pay between $10 & $25 for a spot close to the boardwalk. You will do plenty of walking up and down the boardwalk so it can definitely be worth it to pay the high parking fee for a spot in a lot. There are two amusement parks – Gillian’s Wonderland Pier and Playland’s Castaway Cove. We have always visited Gillian’s Wonderland Pier since it is on 6th street, which is closest to the bridge that we come in at, but both are great options!
5. THE BEACH!! – Obviously, many people flock to the Jersey Shore for the beach. Between jumping the waves, playing in the sand, and eating ice cream, the beach is always a hit with our kids! Make sure to bring cash for the ice cream vendors on the beach! Also, beach tags are required on most New Jersey beaches so make sure you have one before the beach tag checker comes by your beach set-up!
If you’re with family and can arrange a kid-free night away, our favorite restaurant is the Knife & Fork in Atlantic City, NJ! The food is incredible, and it is close enough to the casinos to enjoy the rest of the night at the tables/slots!
