EXPLORE ART OUTSIDE WHILE SOCIAL DISTANCING!
Are you ready to get outside and explore? Restrictions are starting to lift, and it is time to get back out there… well, if you’re six feet away from other people, wearing a mask, and just being careful. It is a different world that we are all going back to, and it is definitely important to be on alert, but still enjoy life.
So, what can you do to enjoy and adventure outside while in the real world? What does your local area have to offer?
1. Murals – Have you ever wandered around the closest city or town and noticed all of the murals, statues, or structures? Start there! A friend recently posted a day out with her family mural hunting in Greensboro. So, we decided to take her recommendation and check it out.
I googled art around Greensboro and found out there were several Wizard of Oz themed murals in Greensboro. These murals were painted to celebrate the 25th annual production of “The Wizard of Oz” by a local theater. My kids love going to see this production each year so I thought they would absolutely love hunting for this art outside. We were able to find eight of them, and we had a great time exploring.
2. LOVEworks – In addition to murals, there are other ways to see art around your area. In Virginia, they have come up with a way for each town to have their own outside art to celebrate Virginia’s slogan of Virginia is For Lovers. Each town is able to portray their history or greatest assets through decorating the four letters of LOVE however they would like. There are more than 150 of these LOVEworks across the state.
We live 30 miles away from the Virginia border, and we have enjoyed recently taking day trips to visit these outside art sculptures. It’s a great way to explore while social distancing. We have visited Boydton, Clarksville, South Boston, Chatham, and Blairs, and we would have never visited these small towns if it was not for these pieces of art. The girls keep asking when we are going on our next scavenger hunt for these signs!
Have you seen any of these LOVEworks? Or, does your state have any art like this that you can find while social distancing? Thank you for wandering along with us!

We love searching new places for murals! Baja and Nashville have been two destinations that have some pretty awesome art.

Great idea – now you have me thinking we need to do an art / scavenger hunt to find the all the painted / designed electric boxes we have in our hood.

We have a few cool spots like this in Asheville, NC. I always like to take visitors to an old silo here in town that gets repaired quite regularly. Right now, it says “Stay Home” which complements the message relayed across the world in early 2020.

That’s awesome!! I love Asheville!
